Turner Center Hosts Youth Art Month

The Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts will host the artwork of students from approximately 50 regional schools in the Youth Art Month exhibition, opening on Sunday, Feb. 28, from 1-4 p.m. Travis Pate State Farm is the sponsor of Youth Art Month 2021.

In conjunction with the National Art Education Association and the Council for Art Education, Youth Art Month celebrates a national recognition of youth art education. This exhibit allows art teachers across the region, as far north as Macon, Ga., the opportunity to select outstanding student art to be showcased in the Turner Center galleries for the month of March. Turner Center Launches “The Art of Writing” Contest for Area Youth

The Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts and the Young Writers League (YoWL) are seeking fiction, non-fiction and poetry entries for “The Art of Writing” contest, open to middle and high school students in Valdosta, Lowndes County, and students throughout south Georgia and north Florida.

The contest will be hosted annually with a different theme each year that inspires young people to express themselves concerning important topics. The inaugural theme is “Living United” and is sponsored in part by the Valdosta United Way. Read More

PAAC Hosts February 18 Meeting at Turner Center

The Valdosta Public Art Advisory Committee (PAAC) will host their next monthly meeting on Thursday, February 18, at 11:30 a.m. In order to practice social distancing, this public meeting will be held in the Josette’s Gallery of the Turner Center for the Arts, located at 527 N. Patterson Street. It is requested that each attendee wears a mask.

The purpose of PAAC is to further the purchase, creation and appreciation of public art for its aesthetic value to the community. The PAAC also encourages the preservation and protection of works of public art which play a vital role in the economic development of the community.

PAAC meets on the third Thursday of each month, and meetings are open to the public. For more information about the PAAC, call 229.247.2787.

Siblings Reunite at the Turner Center

Mark Miller (far right) of Atlanta, Ga., and Terri Winefordner (second from left) of Orlando, Fla., are brother and sister who haven’t seen each other in a year, on account of the COVID pandemic. Mark and his two daughters, also pictured, met Winefordner on Feb. 6 at the Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts—the halfway point between them. They said they chose to have their reunion at the Turner Center due to its spacious and inspiring art atmosphere. The Turner Center continues to be a gathering place for special occasions and events. Turner Center Seeks P/T Grant Writer/Intern

The Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts seeks a Grant Writer/Intern to assist the non-profit organization in applying for public and private grant opportunities. The grant writer/intern will play an integral role in accomplishing the Center’s overall strategic goals. The Turner Center dedicates itself to developing the cultural and artistic life in our area through programming and outreach that reaches all segments of our community.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Center seeks a strong writer who complements the Turner Center mission, which is to promote and celebrate the arts as the regional center for cultural enrichment, art education and entertainment. A successful grant writer for this internship must have:

  • Insight to research and understand grant writing guidelines for targeted foundations and organizations.
  • Ability to write proposals that make compelling cases for art education funding.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent detail and organizational skills.
  • Time-management skills to ensure that grant proposals and reports are submitted on time, meet guidelines, and are of consistently high quality.
  • Ability to participate as part of a team to complete specific projects.
  • Multi-tasking and problem-skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other software as needed.
  • Proficiency in proofreading and editing skills.
  • Ability to work a minimum of 10-15 hours a week for at least three months, or a mutually set schedule.
  • Ability to work virtual or in the office.

REPORT

The Grant Writer/Intern will report directly to the Turner Center Executive Director, and at times, may work closely with other staff or board members for specific grant opportunities.

Turner Center STEAMS Ahead with New Resource for Art Educators

The Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts will launch its STEAM on Tour outreach program on Feb. 1, providing the best-known works of art and corresponding curriculum for local art educators’ use in the classroom. The Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts’ opening reception is Monday, Jan. 11, from 5 to 7 p.m., at 527 N. Patterson Street. The Center’s first gallery opening of 2021 features the 14th Annual DrawProject, “She Said, She Said, She Said: A Collage Collective,” and the 2nd Annual Regional Artists Community (RAC) Exhibition. St. John Middle School Tours Turner Center Galleries

Seventh grade students from St. John Catholic School visited the Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts on Wednesday, December 16. The students and teachers Pam Rickman, Social Studies, and Christine Cabral, Art instructor and a member of the Center’s Regional Artists Community, were given a tour by the Center’s curator Bill Shenton. Mrs. Cabral said the students were particularly interested in the East African artifacts exhibit and VSU artist Julie Bowland’s plein air artworks, currently on display in the main gallery.
