Pottery is one of the most popular programs at the Turner Center for the Arts, and classes frequently have a waiting list. However, a limited number of spots have recently become available in Weekday Pottery Classes for those who have always wanted to study the ancient art. Available class sessions include Mondays 10am-Noon or 6-8pm, Tuesdays 6-8pm, and Wednesdays 10am-Noon or 6-8pm. Students ages 16 and up enroll in one session, and attend the beginner-friendly class for four weeks consecutively.

Class instruction under Turner Center instructor Ramiro Santillan includes various methods such as hand-building, wheel-throwing, and pinch pot and coils techniques using slabs of clay. Students learn how to mold and manipulate the clay and apply glazes, in addition to simple ceramics vocabulary and an understanding of firing techniques.

Turner Center student and instructor ceramic artwork will be showcased in the Glass and Ceramic Art Invitational Exhibit at the Turner Center Galleries, beginning with an opening reception on Monday, June 10, 5-7pm. The opening reception is free and open to the public. The exhibit will remain open to the public through July 31, 2024.

Spots in Weekday Pottery Classes are often held by recurring students for months or even years at a time. Interested new students can register for Weekday Pottery or other classes at the Turner Center online at turnercenter.org/classes, or by contacting Turner Center Art Education Administrator Hailey Rathmann at 229.247.2787 or hrathmann@turnercenter.org.
