Joe Smothers was born in the Piedmont area of North Carolina. He grew up on BBQ, chili dogs, Brunswick stew and Elvis. Joe got his first guitar at the age of 13 when his mom purchased a Sella at the local pawn shop. One morning, Joe’s dad called him to the TV to see a blind guitar player on a local channel in Raleigh, NC. The man’s name was Doc Watson. Little did either one of them know that years down the road, Joe would have the honor of becoming a member of Doc and Merle Watson’s band, Frosty Morn. Years of touring and more than a dozen albums with Doc forged a relationship of deep respect. Joe has performed at every Merle Fest (31) and was also asked to perform at Doc’s funeral. Joe also toured extensively with Jack Lawrence as supporting act for John Prine, Leo Kottke and Emmylou Harris to name a few. Their duo was Smothers and Lawrence and recorded an album of the same name. Joe’s voice is strong and pure. His guitar playing is solid. His mastery in songwriting keeps your attention from beginning to end. Joe has remained active in touring and songwriting and has release several CDs and solo songs. Today, Joe also teaches guitars and splits his time between homes in Valdosta, GA and Cortez, FL with hi wife, Marghy.
