Anita Gillis – Rug Hooking Artist
McGown Certified Teacher | Contemporary Primitive Style
Anita Gillis is a passionate rug hooking artist whose work blends tradition with creativity through her signature contemporary primitive style. Since discovering rug hooking in 2015, Anita has developed a deep love for the artform, with a particular affection for hooking birds, which frequently appear as graceful and symbolic elements in her work.
Anita is a McGown Certified Teacher, dedicated to preserving and passing on the techniques of this historic art form. She actively contributes to the rug hooking community as President of the Wiregrass Rug Hookers and is a proud member of both the National Pearl McGown Guild and ATHA (Association of Traditional Hooking Artists). She is also affiliated with the RAC (Regional Art Committee), further enriching her involvement in the fiber arts world.
Through her teaching and personal creations, Anita aims to inspire others while honoring the heritage and evolving expression of rug hooking. Her work reflects both a respect for tradition and a playful, artistic voice—especially evident in her beloved bird motifs.
