Turner Center Announces Winners in “The Art of Writing Contest”

The Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts and its Young Writers League (YoWL) hosted the first annual “The Art of Writing” contest sponsored by the Georgia Council for the Arts, Guardian Bank, and the Greater Valdosta United Way for middle and high school students in Valdosta, Lowndes County, and the surrounding areas. Sixty unique pieces of writing based on the inaugural “Living United” theme were received for the contest. Read More

Turner Center Receives Grant from Georgia Council for the Arts

The Lowndes-Valdosta Arts Commission (LVAC) was awarded a $15,000 grant on behalf of the Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts. The grant was awarded by Georgia Council for the Arts (GCA), a division of the Georgia Department of Economic Development, as part of its initial disbursement of grants for fiscal year 2022. A total of 218 organizations were awarded 266 grants that provide more than $2 million in funding to arts organizations throughout the state. Read More

Cheryl Carvajal Awarded Turner Center Art Educator of the Year Award

The Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts awarded Cheryl Carvajal with the 2021 Art Educator of the Year award at the Gallery Opening Reception on June 14.

Carvajal began teaching at the Turner Center in 2019, where she was instrumental in helping the Turner Center launch a new writing program for youth ages 11-18. The Young Writers League (YoWL) was designed to inspire and guide young writers and encourage them toward authorship. Read More
